Travelling to Europe? Here’s What You Need to Know About EES and Etias
From autumn 2025, UK passport holders travelling to the EU will face two big changes at the border, a new biometric entry system and an online visa waiver requirement.
But don’t panic, travel is still simple with the right information and a little planning. Here's what it all means, and how Case Travel can help.

What Is EES (Entry-Exit System)?
From 12 October 2025, the EU will launch a new digital border system called EES. This system replaces traditional passport stamping.
When you first arrive in the EU, you’ll:
Scan your passport
Provide fingerprints
Take a quick facial recognition scan
This data is stored securely for three years, so you won’t need to repeat it every time you travel.
What to know:
EES is free
Children under 12 do not need to provide fingerprints
Applies at most EU airports, ferry ports (e.g. Dover), and trains (e.g. Eurostar at St Pancras)
UK citizens are limited to 90 days in the EU within any 180-day period, EES will help monitor this
From April 2026, EES will be fully operational at all EU borders. Until then, it will roll out gradually.
What Is Etias?
Etias is a new visa waiver system, similar to the ESTA used for the USA. It’s expected to begin in late 2026.
Before you travel, you’ll need to apply online and pay a small fee.
Quick facts:
Cost: €20 (about £17)
Valid for 3 years or until your passport expires
Free for under 18s and over 70s, but application still required
Most applications will be approved within minutes, but apply well in advance
You’ll need to provide:
Basic personal details
Passport info
Travel plans
Education/work info
Security questions (past travel, criminal history, etc.)
You’ll apply individually, there’s no group/family Etia, but we can assist if you’re travelling with children or in a group.
Where Does This Apply?
EES and Etias apply when entering:
Most EU countries
Schengen states: Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein
Not required for:
Travel to Ireland or Cyprus
Irish passport holders
How Will This Change My Trip?
For most travellers, these systems will add just a few extra minutes on arrival. Once set up, future trips will be faster and fully digital.
The goal is to make EU borders more secure and efficient. It might take a little time to adjust, especially during the initial rollout, but we’re here to help every step of the way.
